quote response Heart of Darkness

Theme of the novel “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad

The quote “Will they attack? “, “We will be all butchered in this fog” (Part1) in the novel Heart of Darkness shows, that they aren’t sure, if they are safe. In the Heart of Darkness the characters and situations changes very fast. In point good and evil there is no real conclusion, which of the person is good or evil. You hear a few things about Mr. Kurtz, who should be a remarkable. Later you see him as a savage man, who is the leader of a clan of natives. In the first station Marlow sees a lot of natives, who works as slaves. They are called criminals. (Part1)So you think the trader of the company abuse their power and enslave the natives. Later the steamer of Marlow is attacked by a big group of natives. In this situation it is the opposite.(Part1) The attack was ordered by Kurtz, so that they think he is dead.(Part2) “They were dying slowly-it was clear. They were not enemies, the were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom” points out Marlow. He made the experience, that he is the only one who is checking the situation, while the others think they are foes. The book has a big collection of scene for the theme good and evil. The book is very similar to the movie “Apocalypse Now”, that is about good and evil, too. The movie takes place in the Vietnam War.

Conflict or “tension” eg person vs person, or (internal) person vs self; Is this important to the novel’s theme or purpose? Circle one  and explain: Yes

In this quarter there is a special moment that the mais characters have a conflict with each other. They are in the middle of the desert and Carter had to choose between going with his sister to a mission or rescue his girlfriend, and he chose his girlfriend making his sister sad and upset.

2. Setting (When & where does various parts of your novel take place-how are theses places important to the character or the theme of your work?):
The third quarter takes place in Egypt and the Duat ( a parallel world for mystic creatures). Egypt is really important for this book because the book is related to Egyptian history and the Duat is also very important because many important actions happen there.

Carter: In the third quarter you discover that he really fell in love for Zia.

4. Point Of View~ Circle one!: 1st person
§   Why do you think the writer chose this point of view to develop plot character or themes?

He chooses first person and alternate between the two main characters. I think this way of telling the story is really interesting and distinct , it is a different way of reading that i liked very much.

5.Notables on writer’s style and structure!
§   Are there similes or metaphors? Record a quote: “The Nile is trying to wash away the evil that happened here.”

1.   Themes: Record words and topics related to themes contained and developed in your novel:
·   Hopelessness

Personal Response to this quarter: what you thought or felt, related to, did not relate to; how universal is the experience that your protagonist goes through?

During this third quarter I became bored sometimes because this quarter does not have as much action as the other last two quarters. The protagonists experience is very universal, they travel all around the world for their missions in order to save the world from evil.

§   Why do you think the writer chose this point of view to develop plot character or themes?
The novel is written in the 1st person view. I think Conrad has chosen this point of view, because it brings the happening nearer the reader. The suspense can be higher with that point of view, too.
5.Notables on writer’s style and structure!
§   Are there similes or metaphors? Record a quote:

“ ‘What was he doing? Exploring or what?” I asked. ‘Oh, yes, of course’, he had discovered lots of villages, a lake, too –he did not know exactly in what direction; it was dangerous to inquire too much –but mostly his expeditions had been for ivory.’ But he had no goods to trade with by that time, ’I objected. ‘There’s a good a lot of cartridges left even yet,’ he answered, looking away. “(p.51)

1.   Themes: Record words and topics related to themes contained and developed in your novel:
 -war( burnt station, killed helmsman)
-good and evil (different sides of Mr. Kurtz, savages in the forest)
   -changing (Mr. Kurtz character)
-hope (Marlow believes that Kurtz had survived)
-terror (attacks of the natives, fog)

Personal Response to this quarter: what you thought or felt, related to, did not relate to; how universal is the experience that your protagonist goes through?
The situation in this chapter changes very often. First Mr. Kurtz is a remarkable man and in the next minute he is a savage man, who orders attacks on his friends. Marlow made the same experiences. I find , that the chapter is very exciting, because the high suspense. You don`t know, what weird will happen next. I found a few absurd parts, too. Normally, when I heard it at home, I didn’t realized, that so many things are absurd. Marlow made the experience, that a man is not, what you hear from him. He has to think about the point, that the whole travel is worthless, because Mr. Kurtz doesn’t want to come back, although there were a lot of whispers, that he wants to escape.

The Lord of the flies quote response

The quote “The horror... the horror” has very strong relationships with the theme of “Lord of the Flies”. The fear of unknown is one of the themes of “Lord of the Flies”, it is the reason why the kids turn to savages on the small island. “That was awful. It kind of sat up-” “There were eyes-” “Teeth-” “Claws-” “We ran as fast as we could-”(Ch6) is how Sam and Eric describes the beast, which is actually a shadow they couldn't see clearly. This is the horror of the kids to the unknown nature on the island. They imagine the shadow as a fearsome monster and said they actually saw the monster charging on them. “Maybe there is a beast.” “maybe its only us”(Ch5) is how Simon thinks of the beast. He knows that there is no actual beast on the island but, there is a beast hide deep in everyone's mind. This is the horror of human nature. The quote “The horror, the horror” is totally related with “Lord of the Flies”. Every kids on the island show there horror to the unknown. Without the horror, the kids might have refrain from turning into savag

Oh the Horror, the Horror...

Oh the horror, the Horror...
Jake Nightingale

“Oh the horror, the horror...” applies perfectly to the Lord of the Flies, as the characters are a bunch of young kids stranded on an island with no food. That would be a horror for many people; especially because they are in sync with civilized life and probably don’t have too much survival knowledge. This would be a physical and psychological obstacle to overcome and would be difficult to adapt to a much simpler of more difficult way of life. The kids are susceptible to disease, starvation and injury which is horrible for children to suffer through.

Lord of the Flies (1/4)
Jake Nightingale
Skeletal Plot:

-          -  Plane crash
-          -  Children stranded on an uninhabited island
-          -  No government of formal society
-          -  Little food
-          -  Children have no sense of security

Conflict:

The type of conflict is Person vs. Person, the lack of any formal law and minimal food there becomes large amounts of tension between characters. Verbal and physical fights break out quite frequently and relations aren’t a high a priority as food is.

Setting:

The story takes place on an uninhabited island without adults, which is important as it creates tension and safety issues.

Characters
-          -  Ralph, Simon, Piggy and Jack are the main characters
-          -  Sam and Eric are twin brothers with a significant role
-          -  The littluns are the younger kids
-          -  The Biguns are the rest of the older kids

Point of View:
The point of view in the story is 3rd person because it explains everyone`s point of view.

Personal Response:
I think the first quarter of the book was very vivid, descriptive and realistic. The dialogue played a major role in my enjoyment. The characters worked together for a while then did their own thing shortly after in amusing and funny ways.
