Theme of the novel “Heart of Darkness” by
Joseph Conrad
The quote “Will they attack? “, “We will be
all butchered in this fog” (Part1) in the novel Heart of Darkness shows, that they
aren’t sure, if they are safe. In the Heart of Darkness the characters and
situations changes very fast. In point good and evil there is no real
conclusion, which of the person is good or evil. You hear a few things about
Mr. Kurtz, who should be a remarkable. Later you see him as a savage man, who
is the leader of a clan of natives. In the first station Marlow sees a lot of
natives, who works as slaves. They are called criminals. (Part1)So you think
the trader of the company abuse their power and enslave the natives. Later the
steamer of Marlow is attacked by a big group of natives. In this situation it
is the opposite.(Part1) The attack was ordered by Kurtz, so that they think he
is dead.(Part2) “They were dying slowly-it was clear. They were not enemies,
the were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black
shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom”
points out Marlow. He made the experience, that he is the only one who is
checking the situation, while the others think they are foes. The book has a
big collection of scene for the theme good and evil. The book is very similar to
the movie “Apocalypse Now”, that is about good and evil, too. The movie takes
place in the Vietnam War.
